Cold Weather Auto Care

Is your vehicle ready for winter?

Time to get ready for the salty streets, icy roads, freezing temps and heavy snow ahead. Ready or not, winter weather is quickly approaching. Stay safe this winter and don’t leave home without checking these five things:

Essential Auto Maintenance for Western Massachusetts

  1. LIGHTS ON – As the sun begins to set earlier in the day, make sure your lights are in excellent condition and your headlights aren’t foggy or yellow (if they are, it may be time to replace them).

  2. BATTERY FULLY CHARGED – A battery must work harder in the cold weather. If you’ve been driving around with a weak battery during the summer, it can easily turn into a dead battery during the winter.  There’s nothing worse than to be stranded or left in a cold parking lot with a vehicle that won't start.

  3. FLUIDS FULL – Keep your engine from freezing with antifreeze, stay warm with a full tank of gas and keep a clean windshield with washer fluid. It’s important for your safety to keep your vehicle full of its necessary fluids all winter long.

  4. TIRES CHECKED – Winter tires are a must in Western Mass where the temperature often drops below 45 degrees. Winter tires offer improved traction when you're trying to stop and turn on cold and icy pavement. Keep track of tire pressure, too.  Driving around with low tire pressure could mean premature tire wear or potential tread separation (think, major accident ahead).

  5. WORKING DEFROSTER – Stay warm through the winter by making sure to check your climate control before it gets too cold. A working system will help keep your windows from fogging up too.
